A skeleton-costumed criminal locks himself inside a stone-walled garage that is quickly surrounded by police, but somehow spirits himself away without being seen… how?

Maddie initiates a solo investigation to begin with because Jonathan is busy frolicking in the bath with a singer of operatic arias.

In this gothic-themed episode we analyse the story, dig up some location information and track down some stunning real-world connections to details in the show.

In a new feature, long-dead William Topaz McGonagall (often described as the worst poet to have ever walked the earth) resurrects himself from the grave to watch the episode and pen some lines about it.

Danse Macabre was the opening episode of the second series of Jonathan Creek, airing on 24th January 1998.

Written by David Renwick and directed by Sandy Johnson, guest stars included Peter Davison, Pippa Haywood, Meg Davies, Mark Caven, Martina Laird and Gavan O’Herlihy.
